2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report In a Nutshell: Anthony Richardson

With essentially zero starts in his career, Anthony Richardson is a sheer enigma to scouts. His traits pop off on the highlight reel, but that can't be enough, right? The only cohesive (and fair, given his only true start was against Georgia) tape out there is the game versus LSU. Feel free to enjoy the snaps from the other games (especially vs. USF), but we are going to dive into the tape and see the prospect that may either rival Bryce Young or completely phase out of the first round.

Biography

Name: Anthony Richardson

Position: Quarterback

Height: 6'4

Weight: 236

Age: N/A

Class: RS Sophomore

School: Florida

For those of you who are new to the 'In a Nutshell' series, this is a summarized scouting report to give you everything you need to know "in a nutshell."

The Good

This may be a long paragraph, so buckle in. Richardson is defined in one word: 'toolsy.' He has an amazing arm (the best of the class). The ball effortlessly zips out and reaches its target in record time. Richardson's placement on many of these passes is sublime. Honestly, this should be called "The Great" with some of these traits. For his experience level, he also flashed a developing processor: Richardson even did a full-field read that almost ended up a touchdown if his receiver tracked the ball properly. His mechanics also are top-notch, featuring a wide base and quick throw motion. There is a lot to love about AR15.

The Bad

This is not bad at all, but I was a bit underwhelmed with Richardson's mobility compared to my expectations. He was a bit stiff when running and seemed to be a straight-line runner that needed time to build up speed. This is just a nitpick, to be honest, but he may run in the 4.65 range (which is still very good!). Richardson also needs to be a bit more patient in the pocket rather than pulling the ball down to run so quickly, but that will come in time.

The Ugly?

Richardson's turnover-worthy plays are definitely a reflection of his lack of experience in a college offense. Simply put, they are poor decision 'yolo balls' that were unnecessary given the situation. His experience also is a major red flag, but he will be in full command of the offense this year with Emory Jones transferring to Arizona State.

Overall

Richardson is absolutely incredible as a prospect, given his experience level. The ceiling is ungodly high, but the floor is also extremely low. This year will shine light to which track he will go, but the excitement for Richardson to be an elite prospect might cloud many's judgement. Always know this: Hail Mary Sports cares more about being honest than being right, so feel free to check back when more tape comes out!
