Sam Howell was on many boards as QB1 entering this year. After losing his top four weapons, he could not maintain the ascension the draft community hoped for. Even with a solid year, Howell's name is vacant from the first round. Is that warranted? Let's see if this former QB1 has what it takes to claim a spot in the top 32.

For those of you who are new to the 'In a Nutshell' series, this is a summarized scouting report to give you everything you need to know "in a nutshell."
The Good
Howell has a cannon for an arm. Many harp on Malik Willis for his arm talent, but few also highlight the UNC product's. Howell's ball placement is also the top of the class. No one gets within half of a point besides Kaleb Eleby (coming soon and on the podcast link in YouTube videos description!). The ability to run is also a plus trait. Did I mention that Howell is not even 22 yet? For those who love Kenny Pickett, think about how solid this prospect could be in two more years. Adding on, Howell's timing is tied for the top of the class. Oh, and his mechanics are second in this class.
The Bad
Howell has been banged up from time-to-time, so durability is a slight concern. The big issue, though, is the offensive scheme UNC ran: RPO heavy with very little progressions built in. Now, Howell did a solid job with his progressions and decision making when he did have the choice to do so, but the overall lack of opportunities is a negative for his immediate impact.
The Ugly?
Maybe scheme should have gone here, but oh well.
Overall
Still, Howell provides an amazing foundation for a franchise quarterback: excellent arm, solid legs, and very young. Patience, once again, is key for this prospect. There is a chance that Howell is better than stars like Tyler Van Dyke in the 2023 class (Stay tuned because those will be dropping soon enough! Plus, I am a huge TVD fan, so this is a big compliment). Many are sleeping on his potential, but time will tell if the momentum halt will kill Howell's confidence at instantly challenging for a starting role.
